The Story of Dumble Amplifiers – The Holy Grail of Boutique Tone

At Guitar Hunter, we are proud to have owned and sold two original Dumble Overdrive Special amplifiers—widely regarded as the most exclusive and sought-after guitar amps in the world. One of these rare amplifiers came with exceptional provenance, having been owned and played by both Tom Verlaine of Television and country superstar Keith Urban.

Few amplifiers in history carry the mystique, tone, and value of a Dumble. Hand-built in extremely limited numbers by Howard Alexander Dumble in California, Dumble amps have become legendary for their dynamic response, touch sensitivity, and the way they interact with a player’s technique. These are not just amplifiers—they are instruments in their own right.

Individually Crafted, Never Mass-Produced

Each Dumble amplifier was built to order, tailored specifically to the playing style and tonal preferences of the individual artist. This means that even two Overdrive Special amps from the same year are often fundamentally different inside—uniquely voiced and tuned. This one-off, custom nature is a big part of what makes Dumble amps so extraordinary and collectible.

Howard Dumble began modifying Fender Blackface and Tweed-era amps in the late 1960s before developing his own designs, including the legendary Overdrive Special and Steel String Singer. While his circuits were often loosely inspired by Fender or Marshall, his execution was entirely his own—from component selection to hand-wired layouts.

In the 1990s and beyond, Dumble built amps for icons like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robben Ford, Larry Carlton, Eric Johnson, Carlos Santana, and many more. Each one received a unique build, and most came with strict confidentiality—adding even more mystery and allure.

The Most Valuable Amplifiers in the World

After Howard Dumble’s passing in 2022, the market value of his amplifiers soared. Today, vintage Dumble amps regularly sell for six figures, and demand continues to grow. Their scarcity, combined with their performance and legendary status among professionals, makes them the most expensive and collectible guitar amplifiers ever built.

Our Experience at Guitar Hunter

We are honored to have had two original Dumble Overdrive Specials pass through our hands. Owning a Dumble is more than acquiring gear—it is becoming part of a legacy of craftsmanship, innovation, and musical excellence.

One of the amps we handled had the incredible distinction of being owned and played by Tom Verlaine and later by Keith Urban, both of whom relied on its signature tone for live and studio use.

At Guitar Hunter, we continue to pursue the rarest and most historically important instruments and amplifiers. The Dumble story represents the highest standard of boutique amplification—and we are proud to have been part of that history.
