1941 Gibson J-55 – Sunburst
We present an original 1941 Gibson J-55 in its original Sunburst finish. Made in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
This is an exceptionally rare model, produced in very limited numbers. Manufactured only from 1939 to 1943, the J-55 was Gibson’s top-tier, deluxe upgrade to the J-35. With fewer than 400 examples of all variants ever built, the J-55 is a true collector’s piece — especially in a condition as remarkably preserved as this one.
The Gibson J-55 stands as one of the brand’s most captivating flat-top acoustic guitars, offering a striking and luxurious Jumbo body that was available only briefly prior to World War II. This 16-inch round-shouldered model succeeded the legendary Advanced Jumbo. Unlike the AJ, the J-55 returned to Gibson’s traditional design elements, foregoing the Martin-style long scale neck and rosewood body. Instead, it features a solid spruce top, mahogany back and sides, and a 24 3/4″ scale length.
A more ornate take on the J-35, the J-55 boasts upgraded aesthetics, including a pearl Gibson headstock logo and a single-bound rosewood fingerboard. Unique design appointments include a large, carved two-tiered rosewood bridge and an eye-catching stepped-edge pickguard that extends over the soundhole ring. Internally, it features unscalloped X-bracing with two tone bars. The rounded 1941 neck profile is exceptionally comfortable — more manageable than those on later “banner” models.
This example is in outstanding original condition, showing only light cosmetic wear. There are minor dings and finish marks on the top, with some play wear visible on the back, sides, and neck. The guitar plays beautifully, delivering a bold, resonant tone with impressive volume, clarity, and sustain.
Includes a modern hardshell case in excellent condition — latches and handle function perfectly.
