We present an all original 1969 Fender Mustang Competition in its original Burgundy finish with matching headstock. Made in Fullerton, California.

History

This particular model is increasingly rare and highly sought after among vintage guitar collectors and players alike. Fender introduced the Competition Mustang series in 1969, available in Burgundy, Red, and Orange. Matching headstocks were only produced until 1971, making this version especially collectible due to its short production window.
Fun fact: This is the exact same year and model as the one famously played by Kurt Cobain in the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” music video.

Condition

Overall, this ’69 Mustang is in excellent vintage condition, showing only minor nicks, dings, and cosmetic wear. It features beautiful finish checking across the body and neck, adding to its authentic vintage appeal. Over time, the original Burgundy finish has subtly faded into a greenish hue, giving it a unique character. The pearl white pickguard remains in superb shape.
The original frets and nut show minimal wear and have plenty of life left.

Originality

This CBS-era Fender Mustang Competition is 100% original throughout, just as it left the factory in 1969. It includes the original tremolo arm and bridge cover. Both original pickups sound fantastic — clear, well-balanced, and dynamic. The set of six original Fender tuners operate smoothly and still retain their original tuner buttons.

All electronics, including pickups, pots, wiring, and solder joints, are untouched and factory correct — no rewinds, no repairs, and no modifications.

This guitar comes with its original Fender hardshell case, with all latches and handle fully functional.
