Description & Specifications

1952 Gibson Les Paul Standard – Goldtop

We are proud to present this exceptionally clean and 100% original 1952 Gibson Les Paul Standard Goldtop, built in Kalamazoo, Michigan during the very first year of Les Paul production.

History

Introduced in 1952, the Gibson Les Paul Model marked Gibson’s entry into the solidbody electric guitar market and was developed in close collaboration with Les Paul. These early Goldtops would go on to become some of the most influential and desirable electric guitars ever produced.

This example features its original trapeze tailpiece, a design unique to the earliest Les Pauls. Later in 1953, Gibson transitioned to the wraparound bridge, making the 1952 trapeze-tailpiece models an important and highly collectible chapter in the evolution of the Les Paul.

The combination of a solid one-piece mahogany body, carved maple top, luxurious Gold finish, and a pair of powerful P-90 pickups created a sound that helped define the formative years of electric guitar music. Today, first-year Les Paul Goldtops are regarded among the most historically significant and collectible vintage Gibson guitars ever made.

Condition

Finding a 1952 Goldtop in this state of preservation is extraordinarily rare.

This guitar is in stunning, near-mint condition and presents remarkably close to how it would have appeared leaving the Kalamazoo factory more than seventy years ago. The Gold finish remains vibrant and beautifully preserved, with only the most minor signs of age and handling. It is without question one of the finest and best-preserved 1952 Goldtops we have encountered, clearly having spent most of its life carefully stored in its original case.

The one-piece mahogany neck is perfectly straight, and the neck angle is exactly as it should be, providing excellent playability and comfortable action. The bound rosewood fingerboard with trapezoid inlays is exceptionally well preserved, while the original frets show minimal wear and have plenty of life remaining.

The original P-90 pickups deliver everything one would expect from an early Goldtop — rich midrange response, outstanding clarity, and exceptional dynamics. Both pickups are strong, balanced, and highly articulate.

All hardware remains in outstanding condition, including the original tuners, pickup covers, pickguard, and strap buttons.

Playability

As part of the sale, we will include a MojoAxe compensated trapeze bridge, allowing the guitar to be played with improved string damping and near-perfect intonation while retaining the original trapeze tailpiece design.

The MojoAxe unit can be installed without any modifications whatsoever to the guitar, preserving its originality and collector value. No drilling, routing, or permanent alterations are required, making it a highly regarded solution among players and collectors of early 1952 Les Paul Goldtops.

It is worth noting that the neck angle on this guitar is exactly as it should be, providing excellent playability and a remarkably comfortable action even with the original trapeze setup installed.

Originality

This 1952 Gibson Les Paul Standard Goldtop remains 100% original throughout.

The guitar retains its original finish, P-90 pickups, electronics, wiring harness, trapeze tailpiece, tuners, pickup covers, knobs, pickguard, and all hardware exactly as installed at the Gibson factory in Kalamazoo. The solder joints remain untouched, the pickups have never been rewound, and there have been no modifications, repairs, or alterations of any kind.

A true collector-grade example and an increasingly difficult guitar to find in such remarkably original and well-preserved condition.

The guitar is accompanied by its original Gibson four-latch brown hardshell case with pink plush interior. The case remains in excellent condition, with all latches and the original handle functioning properly.
