Description & Specifications

1965 Gibson Firebird III Non-Reverse – Pelham Blue

We present an all original 1965 Gibson Firebird III Non-Reverse in the rare custom color Pelham Blue finish, made in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This exceptional example represents one of the most collectible Non-Reverse Firebirds, and being from the first year of production, it is highly significant for collectors.

History

The Gibson Firebird series was first introduced in 1963, designed by Gibson with input from automotive designer Ray Dietrich. The Non-Reverse Firebird line was introduced in 1965, making this guitar from the very first year of Non-Reverse production. These models were made in very limited numbers and were produced only until 1969/1970, after which Gibson focused exclusively on the Reverse Firebird design.

This 1965 example stands out due to its Pelham Blue finish, a factory custom color applied in extremely limited quantities. Non-Reverse Firebirds in this finish are exceptionally rare, making this guitar highly desirable for collectors and players alike.

The Firebird III features a mahogany body with through-neck construction and three original P‑90 pickups, delivering the punchy, articulate Firebird tone. Its distinctive body and headstock design, combined with the rare custom Pelham Blue finish, make it a highly collectible piece of Gibson history.

Condition

This 1965 Gibson Firebird III Non-Reverse is in excellent condition, showing only minimal play wear and nicks and dings. The original Pelham Blue finish is vibrant and intact and has turned into a more greenish look over the years, with beautiful patina and minimal checking.

The mahogany through-neck is straight and comfortable. The bound rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays is clean and well preserved. Original frets are in excellent condition with plenty of life left.

The three P‑90 pickups are strong, clear, and well balanced, producing the classic Firebird punch and articulation. The original tuners are in great shape, and the original strap buttons are perfect. The guitar plays and sounds fantastic, with ideal action and neck angle, offering the unmistakable tone of a first-year 1965 Firebird.

Originality

This 1965 Firebird III Non-Reverse is 100% original throughout. All hardware, electronics, pickups, and finish remain exactly as they left the Kalamazoo factory.

The guitar retains its original bridge, Maestro Vibrola, knobs, P‑90 pickups, Double-Line Kluson tuners, and strap buttons.

Electronics and wiring are untouched and fully intact, with no broken solder joints or modifications. No rewound pickups, all original and 100% correct.

Includes its original Gibson hardshell case with yellow interior. One latch is broken but the case is still in perfect working order.
