The Gibson Firebird – A Radical Classic Reborn

Introduced in 1963, the Gibson Firebird marked a bold departure from traditional guitar design. Conceived by legendary automotive designer Ray Dietrich, the original Firebird featured a reverse-body shape, neck-through construction, and mini-humbucker pickups – a unique combination that set it apart from anything Gibson (or anyone else) had done before. Its futuristic look and powerful tone made it a cult favorite among rock and blues players.

The Reverse Firebirds (1963–1965)

The original reverse-body Firebirds were Gibson’s answer to Fender’s offset guitars, offering a sleek, modern silhouette and unmatched sustain due to the neck-through mahogany/walnut laminate construction. These models included:

  • Firebird I: One mini-humbucker, no vibrato, unbound dot-inlay fingerboard
  • Firebird III: Two mini-humbuckers, Vibrola tremolo, dot inlays
  • Firebird V: Two mini-humbuckers, Vibrola, block inlays, bound fingerboard
  • Firebird VII: Three mini-humbuckers, gold hardware, Vibrola, bound neck with block inlays

These guitars are highly collectible and known for their unique tonal clarity, upper fret access, and aggressive midrange character.

The Non-Reverse Firebirds (1965–1969)

In 1965, Gibson changed direction and released the non-reverse Firebird. The new design featured a more traditional body shape, a set neck (instead of neck-through), and P-90 pickups instead of mini-humbuckers. Though less popular at the time, non-reverse Firebirds have become increasingly respected and collected for their raw, gritty tone and striking aesthetics.

All non-reverse Firebirds came with P-90 pickups and were available in several versions:

  • Firebird I: One P-90 pickup, wraparound bridge – stripped-down and simple
  • Firebird III: Two P-90s, Vibrola tremolo, dot inlays
  • Firebird V: Two P-90s, Vibrola, block inlays, bound fingerboard
  • Firebird VII: Three P-90 pickups, gold hardware, Vibrola, deluxe cosmetics – extremely rare

The non-reverse Firebird VII is especially sought-after due to its unique three-pickup layout, vintage vibe, and limited production.
