Vintage Gibson ES & Archtop Guitars

At Guitar Hunter, we specialize in historically significant vintage instruments — and few hold as much legacy as Gibson’s legendary ES and archtop guitars.

Gibson introduced its first electric archtop, the ES-150, in 1936 — a guitar that would go on to change the landscape of jazz and popular music. Known for its warm, rich tone and immortalized by players like Charlie Christian, the ES-150 was the beginning of Gibson’s “Electric Spanish” (ES) series. Decades earlier, in the 1920s, Gibson had already pioneered the carved archtop acoustic design with models like the L-5, setting the standard for craftsmanship and projection in jazz guitars.

Our sold gallery includes an extraordinary range of these iconic instruments:

From beautifully aged pre-war archtops like the L-5 and Super 400, to mid-century classics like the Byrdland, Tal Farlow, ES-175, and the game-changing ES-335 introduced in 1958. We’ve also had the pleasure of offering rare custom-color ES-355s, factory Bigsby models, and exceptional examples of Gibson’s golden-era craftsmanship.

Each guitar we’ve sold has been carefully selected for its tone, originality, and historical value — many with documented provenance or artist association. Whether you’re drawn to the elegant acoustic voice of a hand-carved archtop or the versatility of a semi-hollow ES model, these guitars represent the finest era of American guitar-making.
