Gibson Les Paul Junior & Special – Raw Vintage Tone with Historic Roots

The Gibson Les Paul Junior was introduced in 1954 as a student model – but its stripped-down design and uncompromising tone quickly made it a favorite among professional players.
Featuring a single P-90 pickup, wraparound tailpiece, and solid mahogany construction, the Junior delivers raw, punchy tone with outstanding sustain. Available in both single cutaway (1954–1958) and double cutaway (1958 onwards) formats, it remains one of the most iconic and beloved models in Gibson’s history.
The Les Paul Special, launched in 1955, added a second P-90 pickup and bound fingerboard for a slightly more refined alternative – still simple, but incredibly versatile. Like the Junior, the Special came in single cutaway form until 1958, after which it transitioned to the double cutaway design.
One of the most distinctive finishes of the era was the TV Yellow, seen on both Juniors and Specials. Often referred to as the “TV Special”, this color wasn’t created for television branding as many assume – rather, it was designed to look less reflective under black-and-white studio lights, making the guitar more visually appealing on early TV broadcasts.
At Guitar Hunter, we’ve had the pleasure of handling a wide range of original Juniors and Specials – from early single cuts to transitional double cut models, including beautiful TV Yellow finishes with original electronics and untouched solder joints. These guitars are not just relics of rock history – they’re tone machines with soul.
