The Legacy of the Gibson Les Paul: Standard, Goldtop & Custom

An incredible example of an All Original 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard “Burst” with a stunning maple top. One of the finest original Bursts we’ve had the honor of handling and selling.
At Guitar Hunter, we take pride in offering some of the most iconic and desirable vintage Gibson Les Paul models ever made — including the legendary Les Paul Standard, Les Paul Goldtop, and Les Paul Custom.
Introduced in 1952, the Gibson Les Paul Goldtop was the first Les Paul model. With its signature gold-finished carved maple top, solid mahogany body, and P-90 pickups, it set the standard for tone and craftsmanship.
From 1958 to 1960, Gibson produced the now-legendary Les Paul Standard with a stunning Sunburst finish and PAF humbuckers — guitars that are today known simply as “Bursts.” These models are considered holy grails among collectors and players, thanks to their iconic tone, flamed maple tops, and associations with legends like Jimmy Page and Duane Allman.
The Les Paul Custom, officially in 1954, offered an elegant, upscale version of the Les Paul, earning the nickname “Black Beauty.” With features like ebony fingerboards, multi-ply binding, gold hardware, and often three humbuckers, Customs were favored by artists like Frampton and Rhoads. Some rare versions even came with a factory-installed Bigsby — a detail sought after by discerning collectors.
Over the years, some extremely rare examples have passed through our doors. Beyond original Bursts, we’ve had the honor of handling an all-original 1957 Gibson Les Paul Custom – Mickey Baker, as well as an exceptional two-pickup Black Beauty with factory Bigsby. Guitars like these are almost impossible to describe in words — they’re among the most rare and historically important electric guitars in existence, and we’re proud to have had them in our hands.

All Original 1957 Gibson Les Paul Custom – Mickey Baker. Made in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This incredible guitar is one of the most rare Les Paul Custom to come across. Gibson only made this model with P.A.F’s in 1957 and some claim only 7-12 of them were made in that year. We are proud to have sold this guitar directly to Kirk Hammett of Metallica.
