The Fender Jazzmaster: Fender’s Bold Offset Innovation
Introduced in 1958, the Fender Jazzmaster was Leo Fender’s bold answer to the changing musical landscape. Designed to appeal to jazz guitarists, the Jazzmaster featured a radical offset body shape, a smoother vibrato system, and a new pickup design—all aimed at comfort, innovation, and tonal versatility.
Though jazz players largely stuck with traditional hollow-body instruments, the Jazzmaster quickly found favor among surf musicians in the early 1960s. Its wide single-coil pickups delivered a warm yet articulate tone, and its floating tremolo system allowed for expressive pitch manipulation without sacrificing tuning stability.
The offset body was more than just a striking visual—its ergonomic contour made it incredibly comfortable to play, especially seated. Combined with a unique rhythm/lead circuit and independent volume and tone controls, the Jazzmaster offered players a broader palette of sonic possibilities than anything Fender had previously produced.
In the vintage world, pre-CBS Jazzmasters from 1958 to 1965 are especially sought-after. These guitars often feature custom colors, slab or veneer rosewood fingerboards, tortoiseshell pickguards, and remarkable craftsmanship from Fender’s golden-era Fullerton factory. Whether finished in classic Sunburst, rare custom colors like Sonic Blue or Fiesta Red, or even in original blond over ash, vintage Jazzmasters are collectible for both their aesthetic and sonic richness.
While it was initially misunderstood, the Jazzmaster eventually became an underground favorite—embraced by alternative, indie, and experimental players from the ’70s and onward. Today, it stands as one of Fender’s most iconic models, revered for its individuality, tonal depth, and distinctive feel.
At Guitar Hunter, we’ve been fortunate to handle some of the finest vintage Fender Jazzmasters, many with full provenance and stunning originality. These instruments tell a story—not only of Leo Fender’s vision but of generations of musicians who made the Jazzmaster their own.

Here is an all-original 1958 Fender Jazzmaster — the very first year of production — in a rare custom color Blond finish with a gold anodized pickguard. A true collector’s dream and an incredibly well-preserved example of Fender’s early innovation. This guitar represents the birth of the Jazzmaster legacy and is one of the finest examples we’ve come across, and historical importance.

Here you see the headstock of a 1960 Fender Jazzmaster. And of course with no pat. number on the original decal, as this was not introduced until 1961.
