The Fender Jaguar: Fender’s 1960s Flagship Electric Guitar
Launched in 1962 as Fender’s new top-of-the-line model, the Fender Jaguar was originally introduced as the brand’s flagship guitar—a sleek, high-performance instrument aimed squarely at the sophisticated player. With its shorter 24-inch scale, advanced circuitry, and distinctive offset body design, the Jaguar marked the culmination of Leo Fender’s vision for a modern electric guitar.
The Jaguar was Fender’s most technically advanced model at the time. It featured shielded electronics, a unique dual-circuit design (rhythm and lead), and individual pickup on/off switches that offered a wide range of tonal options. Its bright-sounding single-coil pickups, complete with metal “claws,” delivered the clarity and punch ideal for the surf music explosion of the early 1960s.
Its floating tremolo system, borrowed from the Jazzmaster, allowed for expressive bends and subtle vibrato effects. The shorter scale made it more comfortable for fast, precise playing—a design choice that set it apart from the longer-scaled Stratocaster and Telecaster.

Despite its futuristic appeal, the Jaguar was somewhat misunderstood in its time and fell out of favor by the 1970s. But in the decades that followed, it was rediscovered by punk, indie, and alternative musicians drawn to its aggressive tone, raw character, and unconventional styling. Artists from Kurt Cobain to Johnny Marr helped bring the Jaguar back into the spotlight, cementing its legacy as a cult classic.
Today, vintage Fender Jaguars from the pre-CBS era (1962–1965) are highly collectible, especially in custom colors, with matching headstocks, tortoiseshell pickguards, and original nitrocellulose finishes. These guitars embody Fender’s golden era of craftsmanship and bold experimentation.
At Guitar Hunter, we’re proud to have sold some of the most original and rare vintage Jaguars—from custom color examples with full provenance to near mint sunbursts with untouched solder joints. Each one tells a story—not only of Leo Fender’s vision but of generations of musicians who made the Jaguar their weapon of choice.
