Gibson SG Junior & SG Special – Stripped-Back Icons with Maximum Attitude

Introduced in 1961 as the redesigned successor to the Les Paul line, the Gibson SG (originally still branded as a Les Paul) offered a lighter, thinner, and more aggressive body shape. Among the most beloved versions of this model are the SG Junior and SG Special – minimalist, affordable, but bursting with vintage character and killer tone.
The SG Junior was built for players who wanted raw power and simplicity. With a single P-90 pickup in the bridge position, wraparound tailpiece, and all-mahogany construction, the SG Junior delivers biting mids, singing sustain, and a snappy attack – perfect for garage rock, punk, and classic blues.
The SG Special took things a step further, offering two P-90 pickups, a bound fingerboard, and later on, options like the Maestro vibrola tremolo system. Still stripped back compared to a Standard, but with added versatility and elegance. These models were used by legendary players like Pete Townshend, Carlos Santana, and countless others who loved the tone and feel of the P-90s in the SG’s ultra-resonant body.
At Guitar Hunter, we’ve had the pleasure of offering original SG Juniors and Specials from the golden era – including clean examples with untouched solder, vibrant cherry finishes, and desirable neck profiles from the early ‘60s. These guitars remain some of the most underrated vintage treasures in the Gibson world.
Whether you’re after a vintage workhorse or a collectible with soul, the SG Junior and SG Special continue to offer iconic tones and stripped-back magic that has stood the test of time.
