Fender Precision Bass – The First. The Foundation.

Introduced in 1951, the Fender Precision Bass was nothing short of revolutionary. As the world’s first commercially successful electric bass guitar, the Precision Bass—often simply called the “P-Bass”—redefined the sound of modern music and laid the foundation for countless genres, from rock ’n’ roll and R&B to jazz, funk, and punk.

Designed by Leo Fender, the Precision Bass offered musicians a portable, feedback-free alternative to the upright bass. With its solid body and fretted neck, it gave players the ability to play with precision, hence the name. The original slab-body design, single-coil pickup, and maple neck made it a minimalist masterpiece—and an instant classic.

By 1957, the Precision Bass evolved into its now-iconic form, featuring the split-coil pickup and contoured body. These features became standard, making the P-Bass the blueprint for virtually every electric bass to follow. From the early ’50s “Tele-style” P-Basses to the beautifully aged sunburst models of the ’60s with rosewood fingerboards, each era of the Precision Bass tells its own story.

Vintage examples—especially pre-CBS Fender Precision Basses—are among the most sought-after instruments in the world. They represent not only exceptional build quality and tone but also a pivotal moment in music history. Whether it’s a 1951 “slab body,” a ’59 model with a tortoiseshell pickguard, or a beautifully worn Olympic White custom color bass from the mid-60s, these instruments are revered for their tone, feel, and timeless aesthetic.
