Vintage Gibson SG Standard & SG Custom – History, Legacy and Iconic Models

At Guitar Hunter, we’ve had the privilege of handling some of the finest examples of the Gibson SG Standard and SG Custom ever made. With their razor-sharp styling, unmatched playability, and raw tone, these guitars have earned a legendary place in rock history.

The Gibson SG (Solid Guitar) was originally introduced in 1961 as the new Les Paul Standard – a radical redesign of Gibson’s original single-cutaway model. Featuring a lighter, thinner body, deep double cutaways, and improved upper fret access, the guitar was meant to modernize the Les Paul for a new generation of players. However, Les Paul himself disliked the new design and asked to have his name removed. As a result, Gibson officially renamed the model SG Standard in 1963, marking the birth of one of the most iconic guitar shapes of all time.

Throughout the 1960s, the SG Standard became the choice of countless groundbreaking artists, known for its biting tone and effortless playability. The SG Custom, with its upscale appointments, triple humbuckers, and often finished in white with gold hardware, brought elegance to the ferocious SG body.

Among the most legendary SG players is George Harrison, who famously played a 1964 SG Standard during the later Beatles years. His SG became a symbol of the band’s evolving sound and remains one of the most recognized vintage SGs in existence.

Over the years, Guitar Hunter has sold highly collectible SG models including early 60s SG StandardsSG Customs, and rare transitional Les Paul-branded SGs. These instruments are cherished not only for their tone and feel, but also for the unique role they played in Gibson’s history.

Whether you’re a serious collector or a player in search of vintage tone, the vintage Gibson SG delivers both style and substance. Explore our Sold Gallery to see some of the incredible SGs that have passed through our hands — each one a piece of electric guitar history.
