Fender Coronado – Fender’s Hollowbody Outlier from the 1960s

The Fender Coronado stands as a unique chapter in Fender’s legacy—a bold foray into hollowbody territory during the mid-1960s, created in response to the rising popularity of semi- and fully hollow guitars from competitors like Gibson and Gretsch. With its lightweight construction, striking looks, and airy tone, the Coronado breaks away from the solidbody formula Fender is best known for.

Designed by the legendary Roger Rossmeisl—known for his work with Rickenbacker and Gretsch—the Coronado series was produced from roughly 1966 to 1972, available in several versions including the single-pickup Coronado I, dual-pickup Coronado II, the 12-string Coronado XII, and the Coronado Bass.

Though it never reached the commercial heights of the Stratocaster or Telecaster, the Coronado has found new life among collectors and players who appreciate its distinctive aesthetics and tonal identity. Featuring DeArmond pickups, bold body binding, and classic f-holes, the Coronado offers a warm, open sound quite unlike any other Fender of its era.
