1958 Fender Tremolux Amp Tweed 5E9 – Narrow Panel
We present an original 1958 Fender Tremolux amplifier Tweed 5E9 – Narrow Panel. Made in Fullerton, California.
The Tremolux Tweed is one of Fender’s classic period amps and remains among the rarest and most sought-after larger-box Tweeds today. Introduced in 1955 alongside the Vibrolux, these two amps pioneered the company’s first built-in tremolo effect. The initial 5E9 circuit was essentially a 5E3 Deluxe with an added onboard tremolo effect and a taller cabinet.
The larger cabinet provides more tonal breadth, allowing the bass response to develop fully and avoiding the boomy flub sometimes associated with smaller Deluxe cabinets. The tremolo is lush and deep, offering an impressively wide range due to the tremolo circuit modulating the phase inverter bias, which keeps the effect consistent regardless of volume settings.
This amplifier is in excellent condition for its age. The original Jensen P12R speaker has been reconed, ensuring perfect sound quality. A grounded three-prong power cord has been installed, along with the removal of the line-to-ground capacitor and replacement of some resistors, capacitors, and tubes, allowing the Tweed amplifier to run flawlessly with no issues. Both the power transformer and output transformer are original. The original lacquered Tweed cabinet is in great shape with typical cosmetic wear and original nailed-in feet, plus a newer leather handle. Overall, this is a truly great-sounding amplifier from Fender’s golden age.
To keep it as original as possible, a step-down transformer is recommended. We have these in stock and they can be purchased through Guitar Hunter.
